Iceland Pool/Geothermal Springs Waiver
At Compass, we recognize the cultural significance of Icelandic pools and hot springs, and while we don't include visiting these pools/springs as part of our official programming, we do see the value in our participants engaging with and learning more about Icelandic culture. The Icelandic word for Saturday, "laugardagur," literally means "pool day." However, it is crucial to understand a key cultural difference related to pool usage in Iceland compared to American culture.
All Icelandic pools use natural geothermal water and are not chlorinated. To preserve the purity of the water, it is required to shower completely naked before entering the pools. This practice ensures that individuals are clean and do not contaminate the natural geothermal water with chemicals. The Icelandic perspective on nudity is more casual than in the United States, which they see as promoting body confidence and self-image.
Shower facilities at local pools consist of open spaces with multiple shower heads. Guests must shower naked, using soap provided in the shower room, before putting on their bathing suits.
To align with cultural norms and ensure the safety and comfort of all participants, Compass strictly prohibits using pools for any programs involving minors (individuals under 18), unless they are accompanied by a parent/guardian. Compass staff will not enter pools with participants; pool usage is not officially part of Compass programming. However, individuals over 18 are permitted to use pools during free time at their own discretion.
If participants choose to utilize pools during free time, they must acknowledge and accept the following terms:
Pool usage is not an official part of Compass programming.
Individuals using pools must cover their expenses.
No Compass staff will visit a pool with a participant.
Individuals using the pool will be required to shower naked in a crowded, gender-assigned-at-birth shower room before entering the pool.
By agreeing to pool usage, participants understand that Compass does not officially include pools in its programming and participate at their discretion.
Participants must adhere to all Compass guidelines during visits to pools or hot springs and are explicitly prohibited from consuming alcohol during these experiences, as stipulated in their participant agreement.
Eligible participants who choose to go to one of these pools must acknowledge that there may or may not be a lifeguard on duty. Compass strongly discourages people who do not know how to swim from entering the pools. All eligible participants desiring to visit the pools must sign and date the waiver below to confirm their understanding and acceptance of these terms.
